This is a very pretty set, but the very first time I used it, I found raw, sharp edges on the bottom of the handle of all the soup spoons digging into my hand. Not the quality I had expected from Oneida, but they seemed to have taken a new and inferior approach to their business vs the stuff I grew up with. I returned the set and won't try them again unless I read reports that they have returned to the practices that won their reputation.

2002-2003 Price Guide. This identification and value guide has many major manufacturers of silver illustrated throughout. Makers such as Gorham, International Silver company, Kirk-Steieff, Oneida Ltd., Reed & Barton, Saart Bros., Tiffany & Co., and many others. There is also catalog reprint from the Towle Silversmiths Company of their Old Colonial Pattern. This revised second edition is 8 1/2 X 11". The book is completely indexed and pricing is found in the front of the book after the table of contents.

Sterling Flatware Identification & Value Guide Reviews

I tend to immerse myself in as much information as I can whenever I take on a new interest. Several years ago I became fascinated with sterling silver flatware, so I bought books on the subject. This book is affordable and fairly complete--The quality of the line drawings is somewhat uneven. Some of them are QUITE good, but others are fairly simply drawn, and silver is kind of about detail--the shading and depth of the patterns. However, for what it is--an identification guide, I consider it essential to my library. I usually keep it and the Maryanne Dolan book together--using them both to find what I want. The Dolan book has better pictures/drawings. This book has more patterns and notes the collectibility of the pattern. This book ALSO has an alphabetical listing of patterns at the end--which has been quite useful in determining WHICH Josephine pattern, WHICH Kings pattern, etc. And there is a simple, two page listing of silver manufacturer's marks to let one quickly spot a maker, but these marks have changed somewhat through the years, and I am still looking for a more comprehensive listing of marks that would reflect dates of manufacture, silver weights, etc. At the end of the book are pages listing all the pieces available in the Towle Old Colonial pattern--useful for identifying various forks, spoons, and serving pieces. But I like to use the Osterberg book 'Sterling Silver Flatware for Dining Elegance'for looking at pieces--it offers more variety. However, this book IS a basic reference tool, and probably should be in anyone's library of flatware books.

I bought this book along with another (Book of Old Silver by Wyler) for my mom. She was been collecting old silver pieces at antique shows/flea markets etc (getting some incredible deals) buut didn't know all the hallmarks or history. She LOVES this book. Every hallmark that you could imagine is listed in here. At first its a little difficult to navigate but once you figure out how its set up you're on your way - you can determine the year it was made, the county etc. There is also pricing information in terms but what I liked is that it indicates if the piece/pattern is rare, common etc, too. Terrific book. She raves about it and I've had fun looking up some of my pieces too, finding out that they're 100 yrs old is fun! Excellent reference book!

Update: ....February 25, 2010. ****DOWNGRADED TO ONE STAR****

I have to admit that I was faked out by the perceived material and finish of this flatware set, but through no fault of my own. When first received and used the the pieces of this set it seemed heavy duty and top quality as to the type of metal and its finish.

But, after a little over a year and a half of gentle use, the finish on the base metal has started to self-destruct. All of the large spoons now look as though they have been scoured for hours with coarse grade steel wool. The knife blades have deep scratches from just by being moved in and out of the flatware tray, and the forks tines look as though they have been hit lengthwise with a coarse rotating wire brush.

Apparently the base metal of the flatware was rough finished with hand or power grinders and then had a light plating applied to hide all of the tool marks. Well, that plating has now worn off after a few months of mostly hand-washing in mild dish soap.

I have never in my life had flatware that looked this bad in so short of a time. We had to pull back out our 25 year old set of Japanese stainless, which now looks ten times better than this flatware.

As the other reviewer stated, this is a little bit larger and heavier than a standard set of flatware, but I, as a man, like a good heavier and thicker piece of eating utensil.

The spoons and forks certainly do not feel or look as though any hardened ice cream or tougher piece of meat will bend them. The pieces, in general, are about a half inch longer than a standard set and weigh just about twice as much.

They have an excellent feel and finish on them too.

I bought this set as a housewarming gift for my father. I did not get to feel the weight and see the flatware set so, I was bit concerned. However, my father loved it! It is a nicely weighted set. It feels like you are holding a heavy duty piece when it in your hand. This set has a nice pattern too. The hostess set is definitely a nice bonus.

The one drawback to this gift is that the flatware pieces are huge. I do not think that they are made to fit in human mouths. The teaspoon is the size of a tablespoon in other sets. The fork tines are extremely long too. This is definitely not a good set to use with children.

Once you can wrap your mouth around this set then you will love it. The price is definitely a good value.
