Hi, I’ve recently bought an Antique Mahogany dresser which I am wanting to Silver Leaf. Any tips on how to?

Do I need to sand it down first, or just put the silver leaf on top the already varnished wood? Do I varnish has dried after the silver leafing? I have no idea how to do this. Cheers in advance.
